Bonita's
residents, visitors keep close eye on Wilma
The
residents and visitors who were still at Bonita
Springs' most hurricane-vulnerable area kept
a close eye and ear on Wilma updates all day
Wednesday to decide if and when they should
get out of town.
Experts:
Area not in fear of running out of fuel
Don't
panic about gas. If
the gas station you normally go to doesn't
have any fuel, try another or try again later.
Odds are a severe shortage won't happen with
Hurricane Wilma.
Wilma
causes scramble for supplies in south Lee
With
three days until its projected landfall, Hurricane
Wilma had Lee County in a frenzy Wednesday
as residents scrambled to secure supplies
and local schools and government agencies
hurried to cancel meetings and classes and
prepare evacuation plans.
Collier
residents face long lines at gas stations
More
gas is on the way. Although
motorists suffered long lines and short tempers
as gas ran out at stations across Southwest
Florida on Wednesday, many stations expect
to replenish supplies today and Friday ahead
of the coming storm.
Coastal
development leaves area vulnerable to Wilma
Lax
oversight of coastal development, homeowner-friendly
insurance programs and a beach-loving culture
have made Southwest Florida vulnerable to
just the kind of disaster that Hurricane Wilma
poses.
Collier
residents rush to prepare for Wilma
If
people in Collier County are considering leaving
town this weekend to dodge Hurricane Wilma,
local emergency officials are encouraging
them to go.
Strengthening
Wilma could threaten Naples
Tropical
Storm Wilma strengthened after getting into
the history books Monday, continuing on a
path that could mean yet another powerful
hurricane slamming into the U.S. Gulf Coast
and Mexico as early as the weekend, forecasters
said.
Katrina
terrorized the living, haunted the dead
BURAS,
La. — Statues of broken angels are scattered
on the ground, next to tombstones that families
use to label the dead. Many of the caskets
in this cemetery are gone. The slots in the
tombs are empty.
Key
West cleans up after Hurricane Rita pays visit
KEY
WEST — Although his home partly flooded
with a saltwater slurry from Hurricane Rita's
storm surge, Michael Bellotti counted himself
lucky.
"It could be worse," Bellotti said
Wednesday afternoon, surveying the brown,
seaweed-laden water that still stood knee
deep for several blocks in every direction.
Hurricane
Rita barely grazes Collier County
Hurricane
Rita bypassed Collier County on Tuesday, sparing
an area that has escaped damage during a two-year
series of storms which ravaged Florida and
the upper Gulf Coast.
Key
West gets glancing blow from Rita; no major
damage reported
MARATHON
— Hurricane Rita delivered water from
above and below Tuesday that swamped the Florida
Keys and temporarily closed the island chain's
lone highway, trapping thousands of residents
who ignored repeated evacuation orders.
Hurricanes
form closer to coast this year, less time
to prepare
MIAMI
— Many of this year's hurricanes have
been forming closer to the U.S. coastline,
giving residents and emergency managers less
time to prepare for them. There is a bit of
good news, though: some of the storms have
less time to strengthen before slamming into
Florida.
Forgotten
Louisiana parish wonders where help is
PLAQUEMINES
PARISH, La. — A closed casket rests
in a ditch by the road. It's pearly white
with pink trim and pictures of pink roses.
Inside is the body of a woman whose family
thought it would be safe at this cemetery,
buried with other dead above ground.
Hurricane
Rita doesn't panic Islanders
As
Rita intensified into a hurricane and headed
for the Florida Keys on Sept. 20, most Marco
Islanders went about their daily routines.
Storm
surplus worries tourism officials
By
the time it passed 68 miles south of Marco
Island, Hurricane Katrina had downgraded to
a tropical storm. But the calm before the
real storm lasted briefly. Days later it would
strengthen and ravage the Gulf's northern
coast.

Visitors
flee parts of Keys as Tropical Storm Rita

KEY
LARGO — Thousands of tourists jammed
the highways Sunday after they were told to
evacuate the lower Florida Keys because Tropical
Storm Rita developed over the Bahamas and
moved toward the vulnerable, low-lying island
chain.
Business
as usual in Collier, except state of emergency
Collier
County commissioners declared a state of emergency
Monday in anticipation of Tropical Storm Rita,
which was expected to dump anywhere from 3
